Most electrical problems don’t start big. They start small — a warm outlet, a flickering light, a breaker that trips “every now and then.”
Then, over time, those small issues can turn into real hazards.
At Holmes Electric, safety isn’t a buzzword. It’s the first and last thing we think about on every job, whether we’re working in Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Asheville, Hendersonville, or any surrounding community.
Here’s a simple, practical Home Electrical Safety Checklist you can use to spot issues early — and know when it’s time to call a pro.
1. Check Your Outlets
Walk around your home and pay attention to your outlets:
Are any warm or hot to the touch?
Do any spark, buzz, or make crackling sounds?
Do plugs feel loose and fall out easily?
Are there burn marks or discoloration on the outlet or wall plate?
If you notice any of this, stop using that outlet and have it inspected. Heat, burning, and loose connections are all red flags.
2. Look at Your Breaker Panel
Head to your electrical panel and ask yourself:
Do breakers trip frequently?
Is there any rust, moisture, or corrosion?
Does the panel feel warm or make buzzing noises?
Is it older and never been upgraded?
Your panel is the heart of your electrical system. If it’s struggling, the rest of your home is at risk. In older homes around Greenville, Travelers Rest, Asheville, and Black Mountain, panel upgrades are often a key safety step.
3. Test Your GFCI Outlets
In kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms, and outdoor areas, you should see outlets with “Test” and “Reset” buttons. These are GFCI outlets — designed to protect you from shocks.
At least once a month:
Press “Test” – the power should cut off.
Press “Reset” – the power should come back.
If the outlet doesn’t trip or reset, it’s time to replace it.
4. Don’t Ignore Flickering Lights
Flickering lights aren’t just annoying. They can be a symptom of:
Loose wiring
Overloaded circuits
Failing fixtures
Problems with your panel
If a single bulb flickers, try replacing it.If multiple fixtures flicker or it happens when major appliances turn on, have it checked by a licensed electrician.
5. Avoid Overloading Outlets & Power Strips
If you’re using:
Multiple power strips in one area
Extension cords as a permanent solution
One outlet to power “everything” in a room
…you might be overloading your circuits.
Instead, consider:
Adding more outlets
Installing a dedicated circuit for high-demand appliances
Having your panel evaluated for a capacity upgrade
Holmes Electric can help you plan this safely, especially if you’re in a growing household or working from home in cities like Simpsonville, Greer, Easley, or Hendersonville.
6. Be Careful with DIY Electrical Work
YouTube is great for recipes. Not so great for electrical repairs.
DIY electrical work can lead to:
Hidden fire hazards inside walls
Dangerous code violations
Shock risks for you and your family
Expensive rework later
If it involves wiring, the panel, or anything beyond changing a bulb or flipping a breaker, it’s worth calling a licensed electrician.
7. Plan Ahead for Major Upgrades
Thinking about:
A home remodel or addition
An EV charger
Outdoor lighting or security systems
A hot tub or new HVAC system
Loop a professional in early. We can:
Make sure your panel can handle it
Plan circuits properly
Keep everything to code and safe
When to Call Holmes Electric
If you notice:
Burning smells around outlets or your panel
Frequent breaker trips
Shock or tingling when you touch appliances
